Is it possible to transport an adopted animal outside Mexico?

YES, and it’s very simple.  One needs a health form filled out by a vet and the airline needs to be called with reservation for cargo or cabin transport.

Per Pet Passport Information - The Internet's most complete source of information for traveling with your pet anywhere in the World by car, train or air:

"Temperature Restrictions For Pets In Cargo

Temperature Restrictions have been established by some airlines to ensure animals are not exposed to extreme heat or cold in the animal holding areas, terminal facilities, when moving the animals between terminal and aircraft or on an aircraft awaiting departure.

Heat Restriction: Pets will not be accepted by some airlines when the current or forecasted temperature at the arrival or departure airport is above 84F (29C) at either location on the itinerary (75 degrees for snub-nosed dogs and snub-nosed cats).

The Airline Summer Heat Embargo

During the summer months, May through September your airline may not allow you to transport your pet in the cargo department. Some airlines seem to take the position that they will not accept any pets in cargo during these months while others take a more flexible approach.

Solution

Check with different airlines-some are more flexible with rules than others.

Choose a flight that leaves after dark and arrives early in the morning before the runway begins to heat up. If you talk with the airline they will likely take your pet in cargo on such a flight although "technically" their embargo is in effect. Or,  use a different departure or arrival city where the weather may be cooler. You might have to drive 100 miles or more on departure or arrival to reach the airport, but this can be a solution.

INTERNATIONAL - For the most part International carriers do not have this restriction.

Cold Restriction: Pets cannot be accepted when the ground temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit at any location on the itinerary UNLESS the pet has a veterinarian's statement of low temperature acclimation.

The low temperature acclimation certificate/statement/form must include:

1.  name and address of the passenger

2.  name of the animal

3. name and signature of licensed veterinarian

4.  veterinarian's accreditation date and number

5. temperature to which the animal is acclimated

When temperatures fall below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, pets may not be checked even with a statement of low temperature acclimation

TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

When temperatures fall below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, pets may not be checked even with a statement of low temperature acclimation."

Can one send an unescorted cat or dog from Puerto Vallarta to the U.S. or Canada?

Yes, but it's expensive.  You must contact a customs official – 209-2901 or 209-2191 to give dimensions.  Cost depends on size of kennel and only one animal per kennel.  Minimum cost is $400 U.S.  Maximum cost of $700 U.S.  We advise finding someone to bring a dog up with her or him to your city.

Is it possible to have someone bring me a dog or cat to the U.S. or Canada for adoption ?

Yes, it is a possibility, and we have had successes in arranging this.   The weekly newsletter can request people traveling to your city to take the dog or cat.  You would be responsible for cost of the carrier and cost of transportation and must be at the airport to retrieve it.   Please specify what kind of dog or cat is preferred and what size and age.

Contact:  spcapv@gmail.com

Is there a donation required for adoptions at the Library ?

Yes.  SPCA de PV requests a minimum of 500 pesos per dog and 300 pesos per cat.  Donations help us with our expenses and are also indications of one's ability to pay for future vet care. I.D. is also required.

Is the SPCA de PV incorporated and have charity status in the U.S.?

Yes - To avoid confusion with the national SPCA, we have a different name in the United States.  PVCA (PreVention of Cruelty to Animals). Our IRS number is 26 365 6362.  Checks must be made out to PVCA, our registered U.S. name.  Donations  are tax-deductible.

No, though we are always grateful for any and all donations.  If you foster a kitten or cat, the SPCA de PV will arrange to have it spayed or neutered at the clinic of Dr. Juan Tamayo, who donates one free feline surgery Monday-Friday.

Vaccination Recommendations for Dogs

Race Foster, DVM
Marty Smith, DVM
Holly Nash, DVM, MS
Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc.

Vaccines are now being divided into two classes. 'Core' vaccines for dogs are those that should be given to every dog. 'Noncore' vaccines are recommended only for certain dogs. Whether to vaccinate with noncore vaccines depends upon a number of things including the age, breed, and health status of the dog, the potential exposure of the dog to an animal that has the disease, the type of vaccine and how common the disease is in the geographical area where the dog lives or may visit.
The AVMA Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents' Report on Cat and Dog Vaccines has recommended that the core vaccines for dogs include distemper, canine adenovirus-2 (hepatitis and respiratory disease), and canine parvovirus-2.
Noncore vaccines include leptospirosis, coronavirus, canine parainfluenza and Bordetella bronchiseptica (both are causes of 'kennel cough'), and Borrelia burgdorferi (causes Lyme Disease). Consult with your veterinarian to select the proper vaccines for your dog or puppy.
A possible vaccination schedule for the 'average' dog is shown below.

Dog Vaccination Schedule

Age

Vaccination

5 weeks

Parvovirus: for puppies at high risk of exposure to parvo, some veterinarians recommend vaccinating at 5 weeks. Check with your veterinarian.

6 & 9 weeks

Combination vaccine* without leptospirosis.
Coronavirus: where coronavirus is a concern.

12 weeks or older

Rabies: Given by your local veterinarian (age at vaccination may vary according to local law).

12 & 15 weeks**

Combination vaccine
Leptospirosis: include leptospirosis in the combination vaccine where leptospirosis is a concern, or if traveling to an area where it occurs.
Coronavirus: where coronavirus is a concern.
Lyme: where Lyme disease is a concern or if traveling to an area where it occurs.

Adult (boosters)§

Combination vaccine
Leptospirosis: include leptospirosis in the combination vaccine where leptospirosis is a concern, or if traveling to an area where it occurs.
Coronavirus: where coronavirus is a concern.
Lyme: where Lyme disease is a concern or if traveling to an area where it occurs.
Rabies: Given by your local veterinarian (time interval between vaccinations may vary according to local law).

*A combination vaccine, often called a 5-way vaccine, usually includes adenovirus cough and hepatitis, distemper, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. Some combination vaccines may also include leptospirosis (7-way vaccines) and/or coronavirus. The inclusion of either canine adenovirus-1 or adenovirus-2 in a vaccine will protect against both adenovirus cough and hepatitis; adenovirus-2 is highly preferred.
**Some puppies may need additional vaccinations against parvovirus after 15 weeks of age. Consult with your local veterinarian.
§ According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, dogs at low risk of disease exposure may not need to be boostered yearly for most diseases. Consult with your local veterinarian to determine the appropriate vaccination schedule for your dog. Remember, recommendations vary depending on the age, breed, and health status of the dog, the potential of the dog to be exposed to the disease, the type of vaccine, whether the dog is used for breeding, and the geographical area where the dog lives or may visit.
Bordetella and parainfluenza: For complete canine cough protection, we recommend Intra-Trac II ADT. For dogs that are shown, in field trials, or are boarded, we recommend vaccination every six months with Intra-Trac II ADT
